To become successful at digital marketing you must first speak to your existing customers to pinpoint what you are doing right. Conversations with customers help you to develop customer personas, which are key to developing an effective marketing plan to connect with a broader audience of people who have similar characteristics. Questions to ask are:
- What is your profession?
- Which industry are you in?
- What is your age?
- What is your education level?
- Where do you live?
- What are your interests, hobbies, likes, and dislikes?
- What problems do our products help you to solve?
- Are there features about our products that you can't live without?
- How did you find out about our company?
Do all of your customers ask the same initial questions? If so, try to preempt these questions by incorporating them into your sales pitch. If the customer doesn't even have to pick up the phone to ask their initial question than they may be pre-sold on your products and services.
Write down the process that your customer goes through for buying your products also known as the customer journey. Use this process to identify ways to reach customers with your marketing efforts along the process. Create brand touches for each stage of the process.
It's equally important to understand why prospects do not become customers. Ask your prospects follow up questions. This can be an opportunity to learn what your competition is doing that you are not doing and can reveal potential for product and service improvement.
